ST. GEORGE — After stating there was “a lot more in store” for the state of Utah,
Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.
joined other dignitaries Wednesday to officially open
SGSunSmart,
a 466-panel photovoltaic facility on the outskirts of Bloomington.
Huntsman echoed St. George Mayor Dan McArthur and the city’s Energy Services director, Phillip Solomon, saying the one-of-a-kind
solar farm
, built in partnership between the St. George Energy Services Department and
Dixie Escalante Electric,
was right for the community and right for the environment.
“This is more that just a few panels in the desert,” said Solomon. “It’s a project model. We’re making decisions today for sustainable energy tomorrow, and people have the choice to participate.”
SGSunSmart offers “units” of one-half or one kilowatt for sale to utility customers, who then receive a monthly credit equal to the amount of energy produced by the unit of panels. Twenty units of the first 100 have been sold, and SGSunSmart plans to build 19 more phases of 100-unit sections, for a total of 2,000 units.
Huntsman was optimistic about Utah’s future in the
renewable energy
market, emphasizing the current advantages of having “land, a major grid system, creative policymakers and willing businesses.” http://www.deseretnews.com
